William simpson

William Simpson is an illustrator who has done work for things from marvel to game of thrones. He came into CCAD Hartlepool to do a talk with the students and I found him really interesting so decided to post about him and his work.

Will is an Irish Artist/Illistator. he started off doing art for small comic books and as since went on to work with the likes of DC and Marvel. he has worked with characters like judge dredd and batman. since then he has worked on many films and TV shows. he worked on the film Your Highness in 2011 as a concept/ storyboard artist, he also worked on films such as Byzantium and closing the ring. he has worked on a TV show called occupation, but this was only for 3 episodes and he currently works on the famous show Game of Thrones. He has worked on this show since the start.

This website is a small interview with him about season 3 of game of thrones:

In the talk he gave us he was saying how he broke into the industry and was telling us about the struggles of being a freelance story boarder. hearing about his life was really interesting and showed us how much effort you go through to get where you want to be in life. it was interesting hearing about what his job was all about and what his role was in everything he had worked on. he talked about the relationship between the director and the storyboarder and how much vision he can put into the stories.

He also co-founds an Irish animation company with his brother called Rogue Rocket

Art for game of thrones:

Most of his work for game of thrones involves sketching out an episode with the directors vision in mind. He has also contributed to creature design for the dragons, dire wolves and the three eyed raven and has also contributed to the design on the weapons. He created the artwork that features in the complete guide to westeros, which is a series of short videos on the game of thrones season 1 Blu-ray set.

setting up your own bussiness

I decided to do a post on this as I am very interested in setting up my own production company with friends. This post will give a brief insight to making a company, but will outline my options in companies I could set up. I will also explore companies that were set up by a group of friends as this is what I want to do.

Although this a goal for the far future, planning ahead is a great way to start. Below are some articles and guides I have read on how to start up your own business that are very useful.

With me I am very lucky to have creative and imaginative friends who do a lot of different things that could be the makings of a production company. We are all working on a short movie together called the DM (there is another blog post on this!). If we get good as a team I would be happy to start a kind of amateur business with them producing little movies.

Another option for me as a business choice is to set up my own makeup fx company, or a company that makes and sells prosthetic appliances. If you have a realistic idea of products or things you could sell, then setting up a business should be quite easy, but it may be hard work and quite expensive to start. But if the business is a success and you enjoy it, its all worth it.

Companies set up by friends:

Weta workshop is definitely the biggest name in production companies created by friends. I have done another post on this company because I think they are great, but here's a small summary of the company. Weta workshop started up in the back room of a flat in wellington by Richard and Tania who founded the company alongside peter Jackson. it is now one of the biggest effects and design company in the world.

BGFX company are also a company set up by a couple. I have done another blog post on them but basically they are a makeup and effects company based in London who have worked on harry potter and films like the worlds end.

Makeup test for a short non profit movie i am working on

This is a makeup tets is did for a short movie that me and my friends are making.

Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-DM/1600901016799541?fref=ts

My role in all of this is the makeup artist, so my responsibility is to do special effects, makeup and hair on set. I will be doing demon makeup, as seen in these pictures below, also cuts and scars and also normal everyday makeup to make the actors 'camera ready'.

This should be really good experience for me as i am wanting the go into makeup as a career.

Here are some photos of the process and the finished look. this is just the first test to test out materials. All i used was liquid latex and cotton balls, and the only thing with this is that the cotton wool doesn't blend that easily so it sticks out from the head quite a bit.

I also made a poster on Photoshop. It was my first time using Photoshop, so I think it turned out very well considering.

once I have pictures of the process of doing this makeup I will be posting another blog entry on it.
